Rockford, IL – David M. Abney, age 80, formerly of Chana, IL went to be with the Lord Tuesday, December 30, 2025 at Javon Bea Hospital in Rockford. He was born December 31, 1944 in Rochelle, IL the son of Kenneth and Ida (Jones) Abney. Dave graduated from Stillman Valley High School in 1963. He married LaNor “Punkie” Preston on February 22, 1964 in Kings, IL. He worked at Chrysler Corporation in Belvidere, IL for 33 years. Dave was a longtime member of the Maywood Evangelical Free Church in Rockford, IL. His biggest joy was spending time with his grandchildren and family. He loved camping family vacations and later taking his grandkids camping too. For many years, he was a junior high basketball referee. He also umpired for several softball leagues. He enjoyed many years of playing senior softball and was inducted into the Rockford Senior Softball Hall of Fame. Dave was an avid Notre Dame Football fan. He also enjoyed model trains and baseball caps. He was predeceased by his parents, his older sister Yolanda Weisensel, and brother Kenneth Ray Abney, Jr. He is survived by his loving wife LaNor “Punkie” of almost 62 years; his daughter Terri Clarke of Rockford, IL; his son and daughter-in-law Tim (Kim) Abney of South Wayne, WI; his 5 grandchildren Brodie, Braden (Abby), Bailey, Ryleigh, and Tyler; and many nieces and nephews. A visitation will be held Tuesday evening, January 6th, 2026 at Maywood Evangelical Free Church, 3621 Samuelson Road in Rockford, IL from 4-6 PM. A memorial service will be held at 11AM on Wednesday, January 7th, at the church with Pastor Gary Kniseley officiating. A family graveside service will be held later on Wednesday at White Rock Cemetery near Kings, IL. A memorial fund is established in Dave’s name and may be directed to his family.
