Oregon – Mariel J. Holm, age 89, died Wednesday, March 9, 2022.  She was born September 23, 1932 in Chicago, Illinois the daughter to Raymond E. and Mary (Flasko) Gieselmann.  Mariel graduated from Blue Island School District High School in 1950. She married John F. Holm on August 11, 1951, in Oaklawn, Illinois. He preceded her on May 7, 1997.

Mariel and John were lifelong farmers in the Oregon, Illinois area.  She also worked for Caron Spinning in Oregon, and at Lutheran Outdoor Ministries Center in Oregon, and the Ogle County Jail as a cook.  Mariel was a lifelong member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church where she was regularly active in the church choir, and on many church committees.

She loved spending time with her family.  She also loved working in her flower gardens, cooking for her family, reading, and sewing.  She had traveled to all fifty states.  She served her community as a school board member, and as an election judge.

Mariel was preceded in death by her parents Raymond E. and Mary Gieselmann, her stepmother Della Gieselmann, her brother Raymond J. Gieselmann, her husband John F. Holm, and her son Harlan Holm.

Mariel is survived by her children John R. (Teresa) Holm of Seattle, Washington; Nancy (Earl) Polvi of Edinburg, Texas; Peter (Brenda) Holm of Oregon, Illinois; and Lorna (Art) Bacon of Dyer, Indiana; daughter-in-law Patricia Holm of Oregon, Illinois.  She has thirteen grandchildren:  David Coleman (Sarah Fairfield); Mariel F. (Greg) Crosswhite; Kathryn Holm (Travis Echazabal); Brad (Katie) Holm; Rachel Holm; Halley Holm; Brent Wagner; Mikala (Dylan) Hafer; Josh (Katryna) Holm; Justin Holm; Kaleb Baker (Katie McBride); Kaite (Robert) Hofer; and Kristen (Scott) Abuhl. She has five great grandchildren:  Landon, Austin, Logan, Lily, and Noah, and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be 10:00 am, Monday, March 14, 2022, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Oregon, IL with the Pastor Carl Rasmussen officiating. Visitation will be Sunday afternoon from 2-4 pm at the Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home, 110 S. 7th Street in Oregon, IL.  Burial will be at the Riverview Cemetery near Oregon. A memorial fund is being established in Mariel’s name for the Rock River Senior Citizen’s Center, the St. Paul Lutheran Church, and Shepherd Premier Senior Living of Oregon.  Visit www.farrellhollandgale.com to leave a condolence or memory of Mariel.
