Mary Jean Shook, 86, of Davis Junction, passed away peacefully on July 10, 2026, with her loving family at her side. Born in Oregon, Illinois, to John and Catherine (Meyer) Ennenga, Mary Jean was a force of quiet heroism—a woman who fed the hungry, tended the sick, and loved without measure.
She met Melvin "Dean" Shook in 1956 and married him in 1958. For 63 years—until his passing in 2021—they were each other's everything. They danced, gambled at casinos in retirement with their best friends Bill & Wilma Rhodes, and took endless drives to see Christmas lights and changing seasons. Their partnership was the bedrock of everything that followed.
Mary Jean was the matriarch of a vast and deeply connected family. She is survived by her sister, Catherine "Kate" Ennenga; her children, Dena & Robert Ruthe and Candy Archer; her grandchildren (GC): Melissa Frasier, Nathan Little, William Little, Tonya Messer, Joshua Archer, Jessica Archer, and Elizabeth Ruthe; her great-grandchildren (GGC): Hailey Archer, Christina Bennington, Damien Messer, Angela Little, Allie Hargen, William Little II, Mason Haws, and Lucas Laschinger; and her great-great-grandchild (GGGC), Leia Jade Orozco. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Rose Ennenga and brother-in-law Roger Unger. She was preceded in death by her husband Dean; her parents; her siblings Betty, John, Shirley, Curtis, and Roy; and her son-in-law Robert "Bob" Archer.
Mary Jean worked from childhood—ironing clothes for five cents a piece, breaking and training horses, and later running an in-home daycare for 18 children. She worked for G.J. Agner's for five years, Bowman in Rockford for 27 years, and ShopKo for two more before retiring. But her most profound work was unseen: for 15 years, while employed at Bowman, she traveled from Davis Junction to Oregon 3–4 times a week to care for her bedridden mother, Catherine, who suffered from rheumatism. She never complained. She just showed up—again and again, for anyone who needed her.
A "River Rat" in her youth, Mary Jean ran the hills and fields of Oregon on horses and motorcycles. She loved music, fed her community, and built a home in Davis Junction where everyone was welcome. Her compassion wasn't performative—it was bone-deep. She made people feel seen, fed, and never alone.
A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. Please check back for updated service information. In lieu of flowers, take someone you love on a long drive—preferably toward Christmas lights, whenever the season—and remember Mary Jean with all the love in your heart.
