Byron, Illinois – Paul J. Maas, Jr., age 87, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, December 16, 2025. He was born September 11, 1938, on the family farm near Stillman Valley, IL the son of Paul and Josephine (Bulthaus) Maas, Sr. He graduated from Stillman Valley High School in 1956 where he was a 4-sport athlete competing in football, basketball, baseball, and track. He was also class president for two years, vice president of the FFA, and participated in the band and musicals. After graduation he served his country by joining the U.S. Army. On August 28, 1960, he married the love of his life Mary Nutt, and they shared 65 years together. Paul worked over 30 years for UPS as a package delivery driver. He was a member of the Kishwaukee Community Evangelical Presbyterian Church. Paul also served his community as an alderman for the Byron City Council. He was an avid Bears, White Sox, and Fighting Illini fan. Paul enjoyed playing golf. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, often traveling to Florida to see them. He was predeceased by his parents and recently by his sister Jacquelyn Schumacher. He is survived by his wife Mary of Byron; his children: Vickie (Greg) Hilliard of Stillman Valley, IL; Kim Osterman (Mike Rossman) of Wesley Chapel, FL; and Scott Maas (Amy Long) of Byron; grandchildren: Michelle (Kyle) Miller of Dekalb, IL; Karl Hilliard of Stillman Valley, IL; Jennifer (Collin Speight) and A.J. Osterman of Wesley Chapel, Florida; and Blake Osterman of the U.S. Air Force service serving in Tucson, Arizona; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, at Kishwaukee Community Evangelical Presbyterian Church with the Pastor Nick Garner officiating. Visitation will be prior to the service from 10:00 a.m. – noon at the church on Tuesday. Burial will follow the service at the Byron Cemetery. A memorial fund is established for the Serenity Hospice and Home near Oregon, IL and the Village of Progress in Oregon, IL.
