Byron, Illinois – Richard A. “Dick” Hamas, 82, passed away at his home in Byron on Tuesday, August 25, 2026.

Dick was born on June 29, 1944, in Fresno, California, to Albert and Elsie (Engelkes) Hamas. He graduated from Dixon High School in 1962 and proudly served his country in the United States Army.

Dick married his first wife, Norma J. Sullivan on November 29, 1963, and together they welcomed two children, Kim and Michael. He married Kathryn A. “Kathy” Sympson on March 18, 1972. Kathy passed away in 2014, and Norma passed away in 2019.

Dick spent most of his life working as a painter. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, creating art, and wood carving.

He is survived by his daughter, Kim Keenum (Larry Hartl) of Sugar Grove, Illinois; his son, Michael Hamas of Rockford, Illinois; his sister, Joan Lys of Arizona; his grandchildren, Alexandra (Austin) Walsh of Naperville, Illinois, and Tyler Keenum of Naperville, Illinois; his nephews, Matthew Hamas and Damian Lys; his niece, Katie Lys; and his special caregiver, Diana Dockins.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathryn A. “Kathy” Hamas; his parents, Albert and Elsie Hamas; his brother, Michael J. Hamas; and his former wife, Norma J. Sullivan.

A memorial fund has been established in Dick's memory, and memorials may be directed to his family. A private graveside service will be held at a later date at Byron Cemetery.
