Ruth E. Wood

Ruth Elaine Wood, 99, of Rockford, IL, died Wednesday, June 24, 2026, at the Wesley Willows Health Center. The third child of Elmer and Alice Ganzert (née Bower), she was born July 18, 1926, grew up in Goodfarm Township in Grundy County, IL, and graduated from Dwight Township High School in 1944. She earned an RN degree from St. Luke's Presbyterian Hospital in Chicago, now Rush University Medical Center, in 1948. She married Leland E. Wright (deceased, 1989) in 1949 and Mervel E. Wood (deceased, 2014) in 1998. She is survived by two children, Jack Wright (Jane, Columbus, OH), and Jim Wright (Sue, Crystal Lake, IL). Two other children, Larry Wright (Jan, Oregon, IL) and Nancy Wright (Peoria), preceded her in death in 2023. She is survived by her grandchildren Andy, Eric, Nick, Julia, and Mallory and great-grandchildren Myles, Everett, Weston, Owen, Brynn, Vivian, and Tessa.

Ruth worked for many years as a tuberculosis nurse for Ogle County and as a nurse for the Byron public schools. She was an active member of the United Methodist Church and an avid member of the Blackhawk Cycling and Ski Club of Rockford. She enjoyed cycling, hiking, camping, playing bridge, gardening, and line dancing. Ruth always maintained a positive view on life and was a role model for many.
