Sylvia Elizabeth Newcomer, age 92, died Thursday, April 27, 2023 at Jovan Bea Mercy Health Hospital in Rockford only 12 days after the death of her loving husband Max. Sylvia was born August 6, 1930 in Pine Rock Twp., Ogle County, IL the daughter of William and Frances (Linde) Bolhous. Sylvia graduated from Oregon High School. She married Max Newcomer on Sept. 12, 1953 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Oregon. She was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church and a Life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. She enjoyed flower gardening, garage/estate sales and she collected many different things. Sylvia would frequently buy a broken piece of furniture at a sale, and she would bring it home for Max to fix. After it was repaired, she would skillfully refinish it, creating a beautiful piece of furniture. Everyone in the family has at least one of these refinished pieces in their home. She also enjoyed the holidays, decorating their Victorian home at Christmas time, for which she won several contests. Sylvia was also socially active in her community. She and Max were honorary parade marshals for a previous annual Autumn of Parade Festival. Besides the recent death of her husband Max, she was also predeceased by her parents, brothers Willis, Walter, and Ralph, and sister Marion Lambert. She is survived by her loving children Mark (Kay Helker) Newcomer, Galena, Il; Scott (Victoria) Newcomer, Muskego, WI; Lisa (Mark) Vail, Lincoln NE; and Joel Newcomer of Chana, IL; eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren; sisters Verna Watts and Bertha (Don) Kenny; and brother Lawrence (Doris) Bolhous. As per her wishes, Silvia’s body was donated to science. A combined memorial service for Max and Sylvia will be held 11:00 AM, Saturday, May 13, 2023 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Oregon, IL with the Rev. Carl Rasmussen, pastor of the church, and Chaplin John Tuttle of the Oregon VFW Post 8739 officiating.
