Ferdinand S. Fransen, 95, a lifelong resident of Byron, passed away Tuesday, November 17, 2020. Born November 15, 1925 in Marion Twp., Ogle County, the son of Henry and Alma (Slaggett) Fransen. Ferd, a decorated US Army Veteran of World War II, served in Germany from 1944-1948. He was a Corporal and First Scout of the 393rd Regiment, 99th Division, earning a Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal and three Bronze Stars. Survived by his daughter, Donna (Richard) Van Velzer; grandchildren: Zach Van Velzer, Katie Rose and Todd Fransen; sisters: Marion Reidelberger and Helen Mennenga; and Partner of 20 years, Doris Peterson. Preceded in death by his parents;  his wife of 50 years, Ruth M. (Maurer) Fransen, married in 1951; son, Dennis Fransen and his wife Melody; granddaughter, Kim Sherman and her husband, Ryan; and siblings: Robert, Henry, Donald, Frank, Stella and Mildred. He was a noted mechanic in the farming community, called “The Doctor” by farmers for his ability to bring International Harvesters back to life. In retirement, Ferd enjoyed spending his time gardening and in the company of friends and family. He also enjoyed traveling and the fellowship of the Methodist Church in Davis Junction. Ferd will be remembered as an easy going and humble gentleman. With the squeeze of a hand, he was able to set a strong example of what it means to be a good man. Due to the current Covid-19 restrictions, services will be held at a later date with burial in Byron Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Ferd’s name to Davis Junction United Methodist Church.
