Obituary

John "Jake" Broderick, 70, passed away December 11, 2013, in Oregon, IL. Jake was born June 9, 1943 in Norwood, Massachusetts to Michael and Margaret "Peggy" (Doyle) Broderick. They moved to Oregon, IL in the early 1950's where he resided his entire life. Jake graduated from Oregon High School in 1961. He attended Northern Illinois University where he played football for the Huskies and was a member of the 1963 football team which won the College Division National Championship with an undefeated 10-0 record. He was married to Bridget Sassaman for 24 years. He was a member of the Mendota Elks, National Rifle Association, Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Forever and Rock River Valley Pigeon Club. He was preceded in death by his parents. Jake is survived by one son, Jason (Susan) Broderick of Genoa, IL; one daughter, Jill (Herb) Klein of Peru, IL; 5 grandchildren, Colin, Ethan, Connor, Matthew and Lauren; four brothers and one sister, Mick (Elizabeth) Broderick of Mt. Morris, IL, David (Dorothy) Broderick of Rancho Mirage, CA, Jim (Jan) Broderick of Oregon, IL, Dennis Broderick of Oregon, IL and Ellen (Dave) Hoffman of Sterling, IL; and his very special friend and companion, Bonnie Smith, of Polo, Illinois. Jake lived life to the fullest. He loved the outdoors, being an avid hunter, fisherman and raised and raced homing pigeons. He enjoyed playing golf and watching the Packers beat the Bears. He worked at E.D. Etnyre and Co. for 43 years, starting in 1964 as a factory worker assembling chip spreaders. He progressed into the service department, then outside sales, and eventually retired as sales manager in January 2007. Jake was an adored and devoted son, brother, father, grandfather and friend. He had a personality beyond compare, never missing the opportunity to make a great story even better. He exhibited a spirit of quiet generosity to those who needed help and unyielding loyalty to his family and friends. He will be deeply missed by many.

A gathering in celebration of his life will be held Sunday Dec. 15th from 1:00-4:00 PM in the Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home, 110 S. 7th St., Oregon. Funeral service will be Monday Dec. 16, 2013 at 10:30 AM in the funeral home with Father Richard Kramer officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Oregon. Pallbearers will be Gary Roos, Dick Zimmerman, Roger Watts, Steve Carr, Butch Hepfer, Jim Musser, and Don Etnyre. Memorials may be directed to the family to be donated to those organizations enjoyed and supported by Jake or the donor's choice.

Sunday Dec. 15th from 1:00-4:00 PM in the Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home, Oregon

Monday Dec. 16th at 10:30 AM in the funeral home
