Karen M. "NaNa" Martin, 74, died Friday Jan. 3, 2014 in her home. She was born September 8, 1939 in Maywood, IL the daughter of Louis & Luella (Walter) Kaltenbach. Karen moved with her family to the Ashton area and she graduated from Ashton High School. Then she obtained her nursing degree from Swedish-American School of Nursing. Karen worked as a registered nurse at Rochelle Hospital and KSB Hospital. She married Larry Martin on June 19, 1971 in Oregon. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, reading, gardening and spending time with "her boys" and all the family. Survivors include her husband, Larry; daughter, Diane Martin (Michael) Hielsberg of Davis Junction; step-daughter, Candace Walstad; step-son, Randy Martin; grandchildren, Garret Gibson, Joshua Hielsberg, Jessica Walstad, & Lindsey Martin; sister, Bonnie (Terry) Nichols of Ashton; and brother, John (Karla) Kaltenbach of Ashton; She was preceded in death by her parents and her son, Brian Rhinehart.
Memorial service will be held Saturday January 11, 2014 at 11:00 AM in the Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home, 110 S. 7th St., Oregon with Pastor Michael Hoffman of Oregon Church of God officiating. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Friday from 5:00-7:00 PM. Burial in Ashton Cemetery will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the OSF Cancer Center in Rockford.
