Robert A. Hammes, 73, of Oregon, died Wednesday January 15, 2014 in Serenity Hospice Home, Oregon. He was born February 4, 1940 near Middle Ridge in LaCrosse County, WI the son of Leo & Irene (Gronemus) Hammes. He was a graduate of Bangor High School. He married Marjorie Black Cox in Oregon, IL on August 27, 2005. Bob retired from Northwestern Steel & Wire in Sterling after 23 years of service and then worked part time at UPS in Rockford. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Oregon, the Knights of Columbus, and Mt. Morris Moose Lodge. He was a sports fan and enjoyed NASCAR, but was a season ticket holder and avid Green Bay Packer fan. During the 70's and 80's, Bob coached flag football in Sterling for the St. Mary's Packers (of course), and Little League baseball, and grade school basketball for St. Mary's and St. Andrews. He also umpired baseball games. He also loved to travel with Marge and especially enjoyed class reunions and family reunions. Survivors include his wife, Marjorie; son, Tim (Bernadette) Hammes of Sterling; daughter, Jennifer (Allen) Stultz of Rochelle; mother, Irene Hammes of LaCrosse, WI; brothers, Kenny (friend Luanne) of Wausau, WI, Ron (Jeanette) of LaCrosse, WI, and Leo, Jr. (Jan) of Sterling; sister, Renee (friend Steve) Hammes of West Salem, WI; step-children, Carol (Todd) Cline , Pat Cox, Sandra (Jim) Young all of Mt. Morris, & David (Kim) Cox of Leaf River; grandchildren, Espen Hammes, Reagan Hammes, Aidynn Stultz and Gracynn Stultz; 6 step-grandchildren; 3 step-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Leo, brother, David, sister Mary Ellen Pitz, brother, Jerome, and his former wife and mother of his children Gloria Schrabeck Hammes-McKenna.
Christian funeral mass will be held Tuesday January 21, 2014 at 10:30 AM in St. Mary Catholic Church, 301 N. 4th, Oregon with Father Joseph Naill as celebrant. Visitation will be held Monday from 5:00-7:00 PM, with rosary service at 6:45, in the Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home, 110 S. 7th St., Oregon and at the church on Tuesday from 9:30 to 10:30 AM. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Oregon. Memorials may be directed to Serenity Hospice & Home, Oregon Ambulance Service, or St. Mary's Church.
