Honorable John Lee Moore
August 29, 2010

Honorable John Lee Moore, 78, of 504 South 6th St, Oregon, IL died Sunday, August 29th in Blind River, Ontario, Canada. He was born September 27th, 1931 in Ortinville, MN to Harold Leslie and Lillian Olive Ruud Moore. Spending most of his life in Rochelle, IL where his father, former Mayor of Rochelle and Uncle Lewis Moore owned the Moore's Hardware store. He then settled in Oregon, IL in 1955 after marrying Carol Ann Helen McDonald Moore, now deceased. The Honorable Moore attended southern Methodist University, Dallas, TX and completed undergraduate work at Beloit College, WI. He then received his Doctorate of Jurist Prudence from Northwestern University School of Law. As a young attorney in Chicago, John worked for Country Companies Insurance Company before moving to Oregon to join Gerald Garard in private practice, forming the law firm of "Garard and Moore". He served as Ogle County State's Attorney for 2 years. He was then elected to the office of Circuit Court Judge, where he resided for 25 years before retiring as Chief Circuit Court Judge of the 15th Judicial Circuit. He was a past president of the Oregon Lion's Club. A perpetual member of the Oregon Golf Club. Active in the Republican party. A member of St. Mary's Catholic Parish where he helped promote and support the St. Mary's Catholic school. And a 4th degree member of the Night's of Columbus. He was an avid reader, a gourmet cook, enjoyed golfing and collecting coins. He felt gravely for the underprivileged in the world and graced us with his thoughtful wit. His thoughtfulness and generosity was profoundly felt by many. Judge Moore is survived by his daughter Mary Kathryn Moore, 504 South 6th St, Oregon, IL. And 2 sisters, Nona Paul, San Diego, CA and Florence Whinnery, Anchorage, AK. He will be remembered fondly by the community in which he served and missed sorely by his family. Christian Funeral Mass will be 11:00 am , Sat., Sept. 4, 2010 at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oregon with the Rev. Richard Kramer officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday evening from 5-7 pm with a 7:00 pm Rosary service at the Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home in Oregon


 
 
Jacquelyn Evelyn Quinn
August 28, 2010

Jacquelyn E. Quinn, 95, of Byron died Saturday August 28, 2010 in the Serenity Home of Ogle County Hospice, Oregon following a short illness. She was born February 7, 1915 in Rock Island, IL the daughter of Jack & Bessie Baron Danley. A graduate of Rock Island High School, she retired from teaching in the Rockford School District. Jackie was an avid angel collector, loved horses, and enjoyed reading. She is survived by a son, Michael (Carolyn) Quinn of Las Vegas; sister, Kathleen Thompson of Moline, IL; brother, Patrick (Joyce) Danley of Silvis, IL; grandsons, Brian Quinn of Mechanicsburg, PA and Christopher Quinn of Winnebago, IL; great grandchildren, Carly & Elijah; and several nieces & nephews and great nieces & nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Quinn in 1977, grandson, Whitney, sister, Barbara Witting, and brother, Bill Danley. Funeral services will be held Friday Sept. 3, 2010 at 11:00 AM in the United Church of Byron with Rev. Michael Mulberry officiating. Burial will be in Willwood Burial Park, Rockford. Visitation will be held Thursday from 5:00 – 7:00 PM in the Farrell Holland Gale Funeral Home, 506 W. Merchant St., Byron.


 
 
L. Waive Whitten
August 23, 2010

OREGON – L. Waive Whitten, 105, of Oregon, died Monday August 23, 2010 in Oregon Health Care Center. Born October 14, 1904 in Paw Paw, Michigan the daughter of William and Mary (Hill) Clute. Married to Louie Whitten April 21, 1923 in Cassopolis. Mich.; he died March 4, 1990. She was a past member of Eastern Star, home extension, the Yellow Bird Warblers, Esther Circle at Oregon United Methodist Church and enjoyed activities at the Mt. Morris Senior Center. Waive had been a foster grandma at Dixon State School , a foster parent for several years and helped instigate the special education program in Oregon schools. Survived by: son, LeRoy (Evelyn) Whiten of Mt. Morris; daughters, Mary Jo Whitten of Aurora and Linda Hollis of Oregon; 8 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; 6 great great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Also predeceased by daughter, Fay, 4 sisters and 3 brothers. Funeral services will be held at 12:00noon Friday August 27 in Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home, Oregon preceded by visitation beginning at 10:30am. Reverend Richard Bright, Pinecrest Manor chaplain, will officiate. Burial in Daysville Cemetery, Oregon. A memorial fund has been established.


 
 
Aletha Mae Nordman
August 23, 2010

Oregon – Aletha Mae Nordman, age 66, surrounded by her family went to be with the Lord on Monday, August 23, 2010. She was born Oct. 11, 1943 in Dixon the daughter to Foster and Emma (Godt) Thompson. She graduated from Dixon High School in 1961 and North Park College in 1965 with a degree in Education. Aletha married Roger L. Nordman on June 18, 1966 in Dixon. She taught 1 year of school in Melrose Park prior to starting her family. She was an active member of the Ebenezer Reformed Church where she taught Sunday School, Children in Worship, was in the choir, and served as an Elder of the Church. Her love for her grandchildren was evident through homeschooling, attending cattle shows, musical performances and church every Sunday. She was a 4-H Leader for the Carefree 4-H Club, and Past President of the IL Cattlewomen. She was predeceased by her parents, Daughter and son-in-law Lisa Nordman-Ring and Tim Ring, and Daughter Angela June Nordman. Survived by husband Roger Nordman of Oregon, daughter Annette M. (Skyler) Martin of Oregon, grandchildren; Michael, Joseph, Anna, Abbie, Casey, Bode, and Allissa, siblings; Foster (Nancy) Thompson of Seal Beach, CA, Tam (Dwayne) Siex, of Crescent City, CA, and Robin (Anita) Thompson of Spring, TX, several nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be 11:00 am, Sat. August 28, 2010 at the Ebenezer Reformed Church on German Church Road near Oregon with the Rev. Brion Brooks pastor of the church officiating. Burial will be in the Ebenezer Cemetery. Visitation will also be at the church on Friday evening from 6-8 pm. A memorial fund is established for Ogle County Hospice, American Cancer Society, or the 4-H extension.


 
 
Elaine Mae Wilson

Elaine Mae Wilson, 74, of Byron died Saturday August 21, 2010 in her home. She was born February 25, 1936 in Shelly, MN, the daughter of Albert & Alice Johnson Aamodt. She married Thomas F. Wilson in Freeport, IL on July 1, 1955; he died May 30, 2010. Elaine enjoyed arts and crafts, nature, and gardening. She loved conversations, had a heart of gold, and was very generous. She is survived by daughters, Shelly (Bob) DiGiovanni of Byron and Susan (Doug) Hoffman of Rock Falls; son, Thomas R. Wilson of Rockford; grandchildren, Josh Gardner, Stefanie Gardner, and Vincent DiGiovanni all of Byron and Jacob Watson & Tommy Wilson of Rockford; sister, Gail (Tony) Pringle of Ark.; and nieces, Rhonda Kovanda, Penny Cacciatore, and Meaghan Henricks. She was also preceded in death by her parents, sister, Joan Henricks, and great nephew, Jayden Smith. Memorial service will be held Friday August 27, 2010 at 7:00 PM in the Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home, 506 W. Merchant St., Byron with Rev. Randy Snider officiating. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 PM until time of service.


 
 

James Eugene "Gene" Miller
August 20, 2010

James Eugene “Gene” Miller, 82, of Oregon died Friday August 20, 2010 in Oregon Health Care Center. He was born January 8, 1928 in Dixon, IL the son of Edward J. & Alpha J. Westervelt Miller. He served in the US Army from 1950-1952. He married Lucille Matychowiak in Mendota, IL on Feb. 7, 1959. Gene graduated from U of I, received his Masters Degree from NIU, taught 4th grade in Leaf River for 13 years and retired in 1977. Gene was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Oregon, the Knights of Columbus, Kiwanis Club, Nature Conservancy, Whale Watchers, Prairie Preservation of Ogle County, Pheasants Forever, VFW, and U of I Alumni Club. Survivors include his wife, Lucille; daughter, Marilyn (Bill) Ellerby of Sandwich, IL; sons, Mark Miller of Oregon, Father Martin J. Miller of Oak Park, IL, and Will (Diane) Miller of Glen Ellyn, IL; grandchildren, Libby Ellerby, Evan & Dawson Miller, and step-grandson, Chad Zellers; sister, JoAnn (Bill) Powell of Nekoosa, WI; and brother, Richard (Miriam) Miller of Middleton, WI. He was preceded in death by his parents, and step-granddaughter, Monica Zellers. Christian funeral mass will be held Tuesday August 24, 2010 at 11:00 AM in St. Mary Catholic Church, Oregon with Rev. Richard Kramer officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Margene Huntley-Rager
August 17, 2010

Oregon- Margene Huntley-Rager, age 80, died Tue., Aug. 17, 2010 in her home after a long battle with cancer. She was born June 23, 1930 in Chana the daughter of Roland M. and Nellie (Hathaway) Huntley. Margene graduated form Rochelle High School in 1948 and Kishwaukee College in 1981 with a degree in Nursing. She worked as a registered nurse in Virginia, DeKalb County Nursing Home, and Neighbor’s Nursing Home in Byron, IL. Previously she had worked with the Ogle County Special Education program in the Oregon School District and at the Oregon Bible College as a Cook. Margene enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and had visited Germany, Mexico, Hawaii, Alaska, and the Carolina’s. She collected rocks, shells, and Lighthouse memorabilia. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, and hiking with the Stump Jumpers, and strolling along beaches. She loved music and good books. Margene is survived by her son Mike (Kathie) Rager of Chana, 2 daughters; Peggy (Phil) Deloriea of Adel, IA, and Darcey (Al) Nelson of Chana, 2 brothers; Donald (Norma) Huntley of Chana, and Dallas Huntley of Oregon, sister Dellouise Greenfield of Oregon, 14 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by 2 sons; Steve Rager, and Stan Rager, her birth mother Nellie, her loving mother Grace (Strang) Huntley and father Roland Huntley. Margene lived her life in service to Jesus Christ and was a faithful member of the Church of God for over 50 years. Funeral service will be 10:00am, Saturday, Aug. 21, 2010 at the Oregon Church of God with the Pastor Michael Hoffman officiating. Burial will be in the Daysville Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-8 pm, Friday evening at the Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home, 110 S. 7th street Oregon, Illinois 61061. A Memorial fund is established for the Oregon Church of God or the Ogle County Hospice Association.


 
 

Don E. Flohr
August 17, 2010

Byron—Don E. Flohr, age 76, of Byron passed away Tuesday August 17, 2010 from a tragic farm accident. Don was a well loved man. He was a man’s man, a family man and a farmer. He was always there to help a neighbor, to pull a passerby out of a ditch and he was the “go to guy” for many people. He was born in Rockford, Illinois on July 19, 1934. He was the son of Reinhard and Louise (Engelkes) Flohr. Graduate of Rockford West High School class of 1951. Married Betty J. Johnson on October 9, 1954 in Rockford and has been a Byron resident since 1968. Prior to his retirement in 1987, he was employed by Barber Coleman Company as a tool and die machinist. After retirement he became a full time farmer and Betty and he formed “Flohr Farm and Repair”. He was a Navy veteran serving during the Korean Conflict on the USS Bowers. Don was an avid participant in farm sales and auctions, one of his greatest joys was the annual “Rusty Dusty” tractor drive. He rarely missed a fair, tractor pull or steam show. Don and his brother Louie also enjoyed numerous hunting trips out West, Canada and locally. Don was a long time member of the Mt. Morris Moose Club and could often be found at the Friday night fish fry, where he loved to share his stories. He was also a lifetime member of the Ogle County Farm Bureau. He is survived by his wife, Betty, children, Donna (Brad) Blake of Oregon, Doug (Lori) Flohr of Elk Grove, California, and Denise Flohr of Byron; sister, Sharon Bayme of Byron; brother, Louis Flohr of Chana; sister and brother-in-law Norma and Bernie Smith of Rockford; grandchildren, Jake and Megan Flohr and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded by brother, Tom Flohr of Rockford, niece Susan (Bayme) Furlan of Palm Harbor, Florida, and his much loved dog Choo. A memorial service will be held Friday August 20, 2010 at 3:00 PM at the Farrell Holland Gale Funeral Home in Byron with Pastor Randy Snider from First Baptist Church of Byron officiating. Visitation will be held from 1-3PM prior to the service. A memorial is established in his name. He was a wonderful man whose talents and friendship will be greatly missed.


 
 
Joseph H. Parks
August 14, 2010

Joseph H. Parks, 81, of Byron died Saturday August 14, 2010 in his home, surrounded by his loving family, after a lengthy illness. He was born June 24, 1929 in Byron the son of Walter & Beulah Cluts Parks. He married Shirley Nelson in Byron on March 2, 1950. Joe was a Byron High School graduate, received his BS in Education, MS in PE, and MS in Administration from Northern Illinois University. Joe was a teacher/administrator for 35 years in the Byron School District, had a career basketball coaching record of 247-119, and recorded his 200th win in 1969. Joe was 1970 Byron Citizen of the Year, past member of Byron Lions Club, helped in development, and was clubhouse manager, of Prairie View Golf Course, and carded 3 holes-in-one. Owned and operated Parks Sports from 1974-1986. Survivors include his wife, Shirley; children, Craig (Cheryl) Parks of Crivitz, WI, Kent (Denise) Parks of Flagstaff, AZ, Karen (Joe) Shiver of Belvidere, IL, and Connie (Gary) Dieckbernd of Rockton, IL ; grandchildren, Joe, Chris, David, Chelsea, Benjamin, Aaron, & Moriah Parks, Drew, Trevor (Sarah), & Katryna Hogan, Karmen (Bob) Bryer, Kacie & Kelsey Dieckbernd, and Kyle & Chad Shiver; great grandchildren, Paige & Hunter Bryer; and brother Forrest Parks of Byron. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services will be held Wed. August 18, 2010 at 10:30 AM in the United Church of Byron with Rev. Michael Mulberry officiating. Burial will be in Byron Cemetery. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 4:00-7:00 PM at the Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home, 506 W. Merchant St., Byron. The family wishes to thank Dr. Johnson and his staff and Ogle County Hospice for their care and support. A memorial fund has been established in his name.


 
 

Leonard J. Jacobs
August 10, 2010

Leonard J. Jacobs, 83, of Oregon died Tuesday August 10, 2010 in the Ogle County Hospice Serenity Home, Oregon. He was born July 21, 1927 in Marion Twp., Ogle County, the son of Evert & Marguerite Van Hettinga Jacobs. Leonard attended Crowell and Limerick one-room schools in Ogle County and graduated from Oregon High School in 1944 at the age of sixteen. He was a member of the Ogle County Historical Society, the Illinois Corn Husking Association, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He served in Europe and Asia on active military duty and graduated from the USAREUR Military Police School in Oberammergau, Germany. He also was a
30-year letter carrier with the US Postal Service in Phoenix, AZ. Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings Everett, Marvin, William, Gerald, & JoAnne. He is survived by a brother, Lawrence Jacobs of Oregon and several nieces & nephews. Public graveside services, with military honors, will be held Saturday August 14, 2010 at 1:00 PM at the Ebenezer Cemetery, rural Oregon, with Rev. Brion Brooks officiating. Memorials to Ogle County Hospice.

AUDREY MAE KURZ, 74, of Monroe Center died Tuesday August 10, 2010 in Provena Cor Mariae Center, Rockford. She was born Nov. 22, 1935 in Rhinelander, WI the daughter of Emerson & Imogene Allen Dummer. She married Charles R. Kurz on Aug. 10, 1957 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Lindenwood; he died in 2007. Audrey was a member of the Union Church in Monroe Center, loved to pick berries and can them, and liked to walk to the Post Office every day. She really enjoyed her last year and a half at Cor Mariae Center. She is survived sons, Leslie Charles (Deborah) Kurz of Champaign, and John (Joyce) Kurz of Alton; daughters, Arlene (Robert) Seevers of Zionsville, IN, Kimberly (Mark) Beezhold of Hampshire, Karen (Rick) Weinbender of Arcadia, MO, and Deborah (Scott) Anderson of Rockford; grandchildren, Andrew and Daniel Kurz, Anne, Deborah, Matthew, and David Seevers, Claudia, Carl, Greta, and Leola Beezhold, and Jessica Kurz; and sisters, Rose Heilman of Loves Park, Carol Allen of Atlanta, and Joyce (Ron) Gibeault of CT. Funeral services will be held Saturday August 14, 2010 at 10:30 AM in the Union Church of Monroe Center with Rev. David Hideman officiating. Burial will be in Monroe Center Cemetery. Tena Brass Mowers

STILLMAN VALLEY – Tena H. Brass-Mowers, 94, died Thursday August 5, 2010 in Pinecrest Manor, Mt. Morris. Born January 15, 1916 in Byron the daughter of Ben H. and Annie (Ennenga) Hillers. Married to John A. Brass August 23, 1939 in Clinton, Iowa; he died Nov. 20, 1981. Then married Amos Mowers April 30, 1986 in Freeport; he died Jan 18, 2007. Tena lived most of her life in Marion Township prior to moviug to Oregon. She was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church at Paynes Point and Byron American Legion Auxiliary. Survived by: sons, Wilbur Brass of Monroe Center, Wayne (Denise) Brass of New Egypt, NJ and Darryl (Cindy) Brass of Moline; daughter, Mary (Thomas) King of Winona, MO; 7 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; brother, Leslie (Phyllis) Hillers of Stillman Valley; sisters, Vera (William) Brown of Freeport and Henrietta Day of Rockford; sister-in-law, Vernice Hillers of Wisconsin; and nieces and nephews. Also predeceased by brothers, John, Henry and Herman Hillers and sister, Jennie Snodgrass. Services will be held at 11:00am Tuesday August 10 in Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home, Stillman Valley preceded by visitation beginning at 10:00am. Pastor Bob Mellon of Monroe Center Community Church will officiate. Burial in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Paynes Point. Memorials may be made to Pinecrest Manor or Ogle County Hospice.


 
 
Terri Lynn Coltrain-Zeisler

Terri Lynn Coltrain-Zeisler, 50, of Byron died Monday August 2, 2010 in Swedish-American Hospital, Rockford. She was born Oct. 9, 1959 in Morrison, IL the daughter of Roger & Anita Hess Klinger. Terri enjoyed gardening, canning, cooking, and sharing food with others. She was very generous and kind at heart. Survivors include daughters, Brooke Zeisler of Byron, Autumn Zeisler of Byron, & Randi Coltrain of Chicago; son, Justin Coltrain of Oregon; 6 grandchildren; mother, Anita Smith of Byron, sister, Kelly (Ron) Tibbs of Winnebago; and brother, Roger (Tamara) Klinger of Seattle, WA. She was preceded in death by a brother, Mark Klinger. Memorial service Wed. August 11, 2010 at 11:00 AM in First Baptist Church of Byron with Rev. Randy Snider officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to the family.
